Background:
The Trust’s estates teams identified a number of road repairs on the Churchill and John Radcliffe hospital sites that needed urgent attention. The potholes and deep depressions were causing problems for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
Challenge:
ODS were asked to undertake a detailed site assessment and prepare a specification resulting in the resurfacing of 12 locations across the two sites. The total area resurfaced was 11,210m2 the equivalent of 1.5 football pitches and included the complete resurfacing of Churchill Drive, the area around the industrial block at the JR and locations in the main entrance off Headley Way along with smaller patches on Ivy Lane, Osler Road entrance, Roosevelt Drive and 1 staff car park (B2).
Why ODS:
Due to the urgent nature of the works, we were given a short timescale to complete. Our team is highly experienced in delivering reactive works and were able to mobilise rapidly. Our team carried out visual inspections and advised the Trust on the specification that would bring the roads around both sites up to a highway standard. Our relationship with Oxfordshire County Council meant that we were able to discuss and quickly put into place Traffic Management where needed on the highway to aid the flow of traffic around both sites.
Solution:
The works incorporated planning out and resurfacing to depths of 50mm and 100mm, relining and installation of new manhole covers and gully grates. The new surface gave a blank canvas for the client to make changes to the layout of the lining. All works were carried out whilst being sensitive to the crucial day to day operations of the live hospital sites. Our experienced team understands the critical requirement for 24/7 access to these sites, and put phasing plans and methods in place to ensure minimal disruption, to hospital staff, patients and visitors. Once all surfacing works were complete, our gully cleaning team cleared all gullies in the re-surfaced areas.
