Flushed with success - yet again

Oxford City Council in partnership with Oxford Direct Services (ODS) have scooped an armful of certificates and awards at the Loo of the Year awards.

The Council came top in the National Award - England, Local Authority category. This was given in recognition of the best overall 'away from home' toilets, including those in cemeteries, the town hall, car parks and other public toilets.

The awards aim to encourage the highest possible standards. Introduced in 1987, they are owned and run independently. Each entry for the award is judged against criteria that covered both male and female facilities, baby changing, accessibility, space to change and hygiene room facilities. All entries were subject to unannounced visits by a Loo of the Year Awards inspectors.

Cllr Nigel Chapman, Board Member for Customer Focused Services, said: “We've long believed that investing in the city's public toilets would pay off by making a visit to the city a better experience for tourists and residents alike. We know that our public conveniences are among the best in the country and this recognition from the industry confirms it.

"I want to congratulate and thank the ODS staff who work tirelessly to make sure out public loos remain top notch!"

The annual awards ceremony, held this year on 7 December, is recognised nationally as the top award for local authority toilets.

The City Council is no stranger to the Loo of the Year Awards, having previously won awards in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

In addition to the National Award, the City Council and ODS received recognition in the National Category Award - Heritage, Town Halls, the Champions League category, the Premier League - Local Authority category and the Roll of Honour.

The City Council maintains 23 public conveniences including:

  • One at Redbridge Park and Ride
  • Three in parks
  • One in the Town Hall
  • One in each of the Council’s four cemeteries
  • Fourteen others across the city.
