A cup of inspiration

A cup of inspiration

Oxfordshire residents have a chance to see their artwork on new coffee cup recycling bins that are set to appear in Oxford in 2020.

Oxford Direct Services (ODS) and the City Council are launching a competition to design artwork that will encourage people to think about the environment and recycle their single-use coffee cups. Up to 40 winning designs will be wrapped around new on-street coffee cup recycling bins that will be installed in three of Oxford’s busiest areas - Headington, Summertown and the city centre) from next spring.

"We are looking for participants irrespective of ability and background, who are passionate about the environment, to help us raise awareness of this innovative recycling initiative. The best solution is still to reuse, reduce and recycle so we are still primarily recommending reusable cups, but this is an opportunity to make a positive contribution and help reduce the waste that’s already being caused by the 2.5 billion* single-use coffee cups that are thrown away in the UK every year. We look forward to seeing your entries."

Bill Byfield, ODS' Recycling Project Officer who is leading the coffee cup recycling bin project.

The criteria

The judging panel will be looking for art that has an impact. Entries will not be judged solely on drawing ability and people of every age and background are encouraged to take part. The judges will be looking for looking for designs that will inspire people to make changes in their habits to reduce their impact on the environment coupled with a positive message and the ability of the design to reach and engage the broadest range of people within Oxford’s communities.
