Bulky waste collection services resume

Bulky waste collection services resume

Oxford City Council, in partnership with ODS, is resuming bookings for its bulky waste collection service for residents from Monday 18 May, and collections from Tuesday 26 May.

The service was temporarily suspended in March in a move aimed at allowing staff to be redeployed during the coronavirus crisis and to help keep essential services running.  This included putting significant additional resources into helping vulnerable people, taking part in food distribution and supporting homeless people – against a backdrop of increasing numbers of Council and ODS staff themselves affected by coronavirus.

With restrictions easing, and with fewer staff self-isolating or away from work due to other coronavirus-related reasons, the Council, and ODS, is now in a position to restart the service. We anticipate that the initial demand will be high. Please be aware that there may be a longer lead time than normal and we appreciate peoples’ patience as we work through the demand.

Cllr Nigel Chapman, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said: "I realise the suspension of the bulky waste collection service has been an inconvenience for some but I’m sure everyone will understand the reasons why we had to prioritise to keep the most essential services running and help the most vulnerable through the crisis. Thank you for your forbearance.”

Residents can use the bulky waste service to arrange for the removal of furniture (for example sofas, armchairs, beds, mattresses), household electrical items (for example fridges and freezers, TVs, computers and screens) and other ‘white goods’ (like washing machines or ovens).

Oxfordshire County Council also opens its household waste and recycling centres on reduced hours, from 18 May.
