Largest change to bin collection rounds set to start on 4 April
The changes to some domestic recycling and waste collection rounds in Oxford, that were announced in February, are set to take effect from 4 April.
Collections across Oxford are split between blue and red zones. However changes over the past decade in volumes of recycling, new housing additions and traffic patterns have resulted in one week with a large collection round and staff having to work extra hours, while the other week there is a light collection round which typically takes less time to complete. Changing the collection days for certain streets will improve the service and reduce the effect on the environment from vehicle emissions.
Residents should continue to place their bin out as per the normal arrangements on their new collection day – after 6pm the evening before collection or by 7am on their new collection day, where the pavement meets the public highway.
While the changes will apply to all types of collections, the collection schedules will remain the same: food recycling will be collected weekly, rubbish and mixed recycling will be collected fortnightly, and garden waste will be collected fortnightly for those subscribed to this service.
This change will affect around 35,000 households - around a half of properties in the City. The City Council has written to all residents to tell them of the change as well as attaching information tags to all bins and are urging residents to take note of the letters to check if they are affected by the changes.
Councillor Lubna Arshad, Cabinet Member for Parks and Waste Reduction, said:
“It’s ten years since we last had a major overhaul to waste and recycling collection rounds, and with the many changes we’ve seen in our city over that time it is essential that we update the rounds to ensure that they are equal across different collection teams and different days of the week. This will help us ensure we continue to meet residents’ needs and expectations and our service is efficient and equitable into the future."

Residents can find out if their collection day has changed by checking online on the Collection Changes FAQ webpage, and will soon be able to opt in to the new collection day email reminder service, which is planned to launch later this month. The new service will replace the current app notification, which will cease at the end of March. A reminder to opt in to the new service will be sent to users via the app prior to the launch.
