Aristotle Lane Road Resurfacing
Client: Oxfordshire County Council / Oxford City Council
Budget: £34,000
Department: Highways and Engineering (Infrastructure Solutions)
Completed: October 2024
Summary
The ODS Highways & Engineering Team manage the Section 42 agreement in partnership with Oxford City Council for Oxfordshire County Council.
The Highways Team were approached by Oxfordshire County Council, Road Agreements Team Senior Engineer, as they held a retention on the works carried out by Network Rail. Due to the failure of the binding ballast on the footpath they asked us to grade off and resurface the bridleway.
Requirements
To apply a high-quality material that was suitable and fit for purpose and would suit the requirements of Natural England as this was within a SSSI site. The allotment had to be accessible for use at all time, so a phased programme was implemented to allow access.
Challenges
Creating a diversion route for pedestrians as the bridleway services Port Meadow and the local allotments.
The bridleway is within the footprint of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) so Natural England had to sign off all aspects of the work.
We had to engage with owners of the allotments, an Ecologist and the major stakeholder.
This work had to be delivered within the timeframe as agreed by Natural England.
Solutions
We resurfaced the bridleway, using a product called Flex-pave which is Eco friendly and made from recycled materials, which was approved by Natural England.
Results
The resurfacing project was successfully completed, significantly improving the quality and durability of Bridleway surface for all users.
Feedback
ODS delivered the scheme to a high standard with minimum disruption.
