Digging Lane Flooding Alleviation

Client: Fyfield and Tubney Parish Council / Oxfordshire County Council

Budget: £8,500

Department: Highways and Engineering (Infrastructure Solutions)

Completed: November 2024

Summary

ODS Highways was approached by the parish of Fyfield and Tubney to resolve a persistent flooding issue. The flooding affected several properties and a large section of the road, creating safety hazards and inconvenience for residents.

Requirements

To prevent surface water runoff from flooding properties and the road.

To connect the main roadside ditch to a pipe under the road.

To install an access chamber to facilitate future maintenance and drainage.

Challenges

  1. Working on a flooded road and ditch created difficult conditions for workers and machinery.

  2. Managing the project on a small and busy road required careful planning to minimise disruption.

  3. Uncertainty about the location of the existing pipe added complexity to the project.

Solutions

Closed the road and implemented diversion routes to ensure safety and reduce traffic disruption.

Deployed two large 6-inch pumps to remove the floodwater effectively, creating a workable environment.

Located the existing pipe using investigative techniques and connected it to the new system.

Installed an access chamber with two inlet pipes connected to the existing pipe to enhance drainage efficiency.

As an added value, dug multiple grips off the road into the ditch to improve water flow and prevent future flooding.

Results

The fields and ditches now drain effectively, preventing water buildup.

The road remains free of standing water, improving safety and accessibility.

Project completed, delivering a cost-effective and sustainable solution.
